I grew up in Seattle and have watched the Mariner’s play every season since the franchise began. My favorite player of all time is Edgar Martinez. He is most famous for his clutch double in 1995 to win the division. During his career he won two batting titles and the award for Best Designated Hitter was named after him. As the Mariner’s new hitting coach, he is now being credited for the M’s success this season.
Martinez’s team mate of 11 years, Dan Wilson states, “Even though he was a gifted hitter, he was a guy who really broke down his swing, really understood his swing, really understood hitting in general. I think that’s the difference with a guy like that.”
This sort of attention to detail went beyond hitting for Martinez. It is common knowledge that he understood the importance of vision to his game and would perform eye exercises before games to keep his vision and depth perception as good as possible.
